Miami Dolphins OC Chan Gailey concerned about potential shenanigans with fake crowd noise - USA TODAY

Five years ago, the Atlanta Falcons actually lost a draft choice when they were caught pumping fake crowd noise into their home games.

Of course, there were fans at those game.

With many NFL teams going without fans at least at the start of this season, the league is considering permitting fake crowd noise, according to ESPN.

“I haven’t heard any official word on that,” Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said Thursday. “I keep asking the same question, though.”

Gailey has enough problems on his plate. Now he’s got to worry about what the noise pumped in at Gillette Stadium or MetLife Stadium will sound like?

“Is that what’s going to happen and then who controls the volume on that?” Gailey said. “If you get a homer that slips that volume a little bit louder on third down, I’m not sure I’m for that a lot.”

NFL RECORD PROJECTIONS: How will Dolphins finish?

Some leagues have been trying to make the home viewing experience a bit better for fans by adding noise. At times the noise is added by the production team. And at times it’s actually pumped in at the stadium.

In the NFL, crowd noise can hurt an offense’s ability to easily communicate. And the start of this season, with no on-field spring and a truncated fall camp with no preseason games, it figures to be ugly enough.

“If it is loud, you have to be ready to communicate, get the message to everybody, you have to be able to make sure that everybody knows what they’re doing and what we’re doing,” Miami quarterbacks coach Robby Brown said. “It could be an issue, but I don’t know exactly how that’s going to work yet. Hopefully they won’t turn it up too loud when we’ve got the ball.”

If veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick is playing, it should help reduce the issues for Miami. But still, he will be protected by up to three rookie offensive linemen.

In general, Brown and Gailey cited a proliferation of communication issues in the first three days of padded practice. It should get better.

Gailey has coached 40 seasons without fake crowd noise. Who knows what impact it could have on fall Sundays.

Offenses benefit from rhythm and timing. The quarterback usually calls for the snap with his voice. It could be somewhat comical if, in an empty stadium, an offense was forced to go to a visual clue such as a head bob or tap on the center’s knee from a guard to start a play.

Not ideal.

“You have to have that silent count ready to go if they start doing that, so we’ll get that going to make sure we cover all our bases before it’s over with,” Gailey said. “Who’s going to control that? That’s the key to me.”
