Control Publisher Explains Why the Base Game Won't Get Free Next-Gen Upgrades - IGN - IGN

505 Games has released a blog post that explains why the base game of Control
won't get free next-gen upgrades.505, the publisher behind Remedy Entertainment's Control, announced the Ultimate Edition of the game last week, which will come with the base game, its two expansions, and allow for a free next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X. The announcement caused an uproar because it turns out, the next-gen upgrade is only available to those who purchase the Ultimate Edition, meaning those who have already purchased and supported the game will need to buy the game again to play the next-gen version.

"The upgrade path we are offering is only possible when upgrading from the same version of the game," 505 Games said in a blog post made on August 20. "As we are only doing additional development on Control Ultimate Edition on the next gen platforms, we are unfortunately unable to offer an upgrade path to all existing Control players."

Confirmed PlayStation 5 Games

505 Games said it understands how this might upset some players but that those players "will still be able to play the 2019 edition of Control and each Expansion on the new platforms" (referring to backwards compatability features on both Xbox Series X and PS5).

"To bring Control to next generation consoles in any form, we had to make some difficult decisions and those came in the form of creating the simplified Control Ultimate Edition product plan we have today. That we took a while responding does not mean we have not been listening. We are sorry we couldn't meet everyone's expectations and we hope you will continue to support Control."

The publisher said it spent several months exploring all of the possible launch options for the Control Ultimate Edition and that no decision made was taken lightly. It said it was difficult to upgrade its "current user base to next gen with full parity across platforms with our year-old game."

While every publisher and developer is different, it's not unheard of for a game to get free next-gen upgrades, which might explain some of the backlash 505 Games received last week. Xbox has reportedly told all developers that their next-gen upgrades should be free while games like Madden NFL 21, Cyberpunk 2077, and Doom Eternal have already had free next-gen upgrades announced.
