Updated, 11:08 a.m.: Cincinnati City Councilman David Mann walked to Denore Park on Ludlow Avenue at about 20 minutes after more than half the crowd had left a protest that started around 7 a.m.
Protesters initially planned to march to Mann's house nearby before switching up their plan. Protesters said they were concerned they might be trapped because police were tipped off the march was happening.
"I've been waiting for you since 7 o'clock," Mann said.
Mann said he then heard from The Enquirer online that protesters wanted him to come to the park.
"Here I am, and now you're complaining that I'm here," he said.
A male protester said Mann should vow to block the police budget as it is now.
Mann talked with protesters for about five minutes before walking away after the following exchange.
A female protester said Mann understood and "didn't care."
"You don't know me," Mann said back to her. "You don't know anything about my career."
"How many police officers do you want me to lay off," Mann said.
A protester shouted "all of them."
Then Mann grabbed his wife by the arm and walked away.
Afterward, Mann said he heard about the protest and had planned on going outside to talk to the protesters. When they re-grouped at the park he went there to hear them out.
He said he found many of the same people who were at Thursday’s hearing.
“They don’t want to talk,” Mann said. “They want to shout. They want total agreement with what they want to say. I tried to tell them I would meet with them, but they don’t want to.”
Previous reporting: A group of 50 to 60 people are now gathered at Denore Park on Ludlow Avenue to demand the councilman listen to them after he closed down a budget meeting last week. Mann said he will talk with the protesters.
On Thursday, Mann shut down a budget meeting after the crowd booed and shouted at a person speaking on behalf of police. He left the meeting after officially closing the meeting.
A protest then started on the sidewalks and lanes of Elm Street outside the convention center. A crowd of several hundred remained there until close to midnight, listening to speakers and music, when it started to break up.
They said they were occupying the block in front of the convention center's main entrance. Police were nearby on the periphery of the area but stayed out of the block.
The Enquirer has a reporter and photographer at this morning's protest and will update this story.
