Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the formation this week of regional committees to help coordinate the state’s phased reopenings.

He’s calling them “control rooms” and they’ll be monitoring things like local hospitalization rates, testing and hospital capacity to make sure regions are meeting state requirements.

“They monitor those numbers we’re talking about. They control that valve,” said Cuomo on Tuesday. “They make sure businesses are complying with the safety precautions when the businesses go back.”

Jim McKenna is one of 10 members appointed to the North Country’s “control room.” He’s also the co-chair of the North Country Regional Economic Development Council.

“Really, our first discussions are clearly about the metrics that the governor has laid out and concentrating on making sure that the North Country is in a position to start phase one of reopening," he said.

Their initial call was mostly an inventory of each of the seven county’s testing status and what steps were needed to increase that number, according to McKenna.

He says they’ll also be giving guidance to businesses on what they need to do to operate safely.

“We think that there will be some information coming out on that in the very near future. We think there will be sort of specific templates by industries that businesses can fill out, and that will sort of lay out the guidelines of what they have to do," he said.

He said this may through a centralized system, but will mostly be for businesses to post, "to let everybody know they are following the appropriate procedures.”

McKenna says first getting a handle on the data will be crucial to making sure the North Country can move forward and figure out what adjustments need to be made if they fall short on some benchmarks.

Members of the governor's North Country regional committee:

  • Regional Captain: Erik Kulleseid, NYS Parks Commissioner
  • Jim McKenna, REDC Co-Chair
  • Ron McDougall, President of the Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties Central Trades and Labor Council

  • Lewis County Board of Legislators Chair Lawrence Dolhof
