Letter: ‘Right to life’ crowd is making a U-turn - Chico Enterprise-Record

As we hear more tolerance for the loss of life in this pandemic we wonder whatever became of the right to life crowd.  Over the years they have impressed us with their dedication to the sanctity of life in the womb.  Many of us who have held that belief at some time or another sympathized and tried to understand their passion.

Now we hear from the same crowd that a certain sacrifice of life must be endured in order to maintain our economic prowess as well as our “way of life.” This tolerance for death of the elderly, the infirm, the disabled is reminiscent of the phrase “useless eaters” popularized by the German Third Reich.

Studies have been made that conservatives, especially white males, are more likely to prefer the death of the elderly and infirm in order to maintain the status quo.  Women and left leaning men are more likely to prefer the economy take a hit in order to preserve life.

And the amazing factor is the Christian Churches are in this mix.  Many of them are agitating to bring back their congregations tempting fate in the process.  Can anyone explain this very puzzling dichotomy?

Is life before birth the only life we care about?  At long last has the “Right to Life Movement” been “unmasked”?
