About 100 people standing with signs and flags gathered on Chardon Square last weekend, May 9, to rally against Gov. Mike DeWine and Health Director Amy Acton, calling their orders during the coronavirus outbreak “repressive” and “unnecessary.”

The event was coordinated by Free Ohio Now and sponsored by the Geauga County Tea Party.

“The April 30 Stay Safe Order issued by the Ohio Health Director includes an unconstitutional mandate stipulating that certain businesses and operations remain closed until the Order is amended or rescinded,” a prepared statement read.

Centered around the Square’s bandstand, the organizers carried American and Gadsden, or “Don’t Treat On Me,” flags. One man walked the event, circling with an Ohio flag. There were signs in the crowd, like “Freedom of Assembly Let Us Choose.”

After a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance, Jim McNeal, vice president of the Geauga County Tea Party, and member Kathy Johnson introduced the speakers.

“Absolute safety does not exist,” Johnson said, reading from prepared remarks. “And trading freedom for safety will bring us neither. Never before has a virus or illness so restricted our freedoms, closed our businesses or created such a dangerous surge of unemployment.”

“The Constitution was established to protect your liberties,” said Chester Township Trustee Skip Claypool. “It wasn’t established to determine how you work, where you work, how far you have to be from somebody.”

Mario Innocenzi, a Geauga County Tea Party member and small business owner of a barbershop in Parma, called the dozen or so young members of the audience to the front before he spoke.

“This is the youth of today. Our hope tomorrow,” Innocenzi said.

He continued: “They asked us to flatten the curve. We stayed home for 15 days. We were all OK with that. Then it went to 30 days. Now it’s been since March 17 we have not worked. Enough is enough.”

Geauga County Common Pleas Judge Timothy J. Grendell and Ohio State Rep. Diane V. Grendell (R-Chesterland) also both addressed the crowd.
