FOX announcer Joe Buck made headlines Wednesday, telling Sirius XM’s Andy Cohen Live that FOX was likely to pump in fake crowd noise and maybe even show virtual fans if NFL stadiums are empty this fall. On Thursday, he took to Twitter to clarify his remarks, saying that the network is considering a series of different things in case fans aren’t allowed into stadiums once the season begins in September.
“I’ve been saying for over a month, including on HBO in April, that some ambient crowd noise under a broadcast is a simple, necessary tool to normalize the viewing experience at home,” Buck tweeted. In a second tweet, he added, “There is no ‘traditional’ take on this topic. It’s new territory. Hoping stadiums are full and all is normal. If not, then it’s a blank canvas. All networks will try to make it look and sound as normal as possible. It could lead to unprecedented, thrilling access. Who knows?”
In his interview with Cohen, Buck seemed pretty sure FOX viewed the league playing in empty stadiums as a foregone conclusion.
“It’s pretty much a done deal," Buck said on Sirius XM. "I think whoever is going to have to be really good at their job and be realistic with how a crowd would react depending on what just happened on the field. So it’s really important. And then on top of that... they’re looking at ways to put virtual fans in the stands, so when you see a wide shot it looks like the stadium is jam-packed and in fact it’ll be empty.”
A day later, he said that FOX is merely working on potential ideas for filling the void potentially created by empty stadiums, noting how important crowds can be to the broadcast experience.
“Contrary to the misleading headline at SI and other places - I said FOX is WORKING on virtual fans,” he tweeted. “They are working everyday on ANYTHING to make our shows the best on TV. That’s exciting to me, and I am thankful.”
