Matt Patricia's head coaching career has gotten off to a rocky start.

The former New England Patriots defensive coordinator has gone 9-22-1 in his first two seasons as head coach of the Detroit Lions. On top of that, multiple ex-Lions players including Glover Quin and Darius Slay have publicly ripped Patricia for his coaching style.

There was some speculation last year about Patricia being on the hot seat. However, despite the 3-12-1 finish to the 2019 campaign, the Lions decided to give the three-time Super Bowl champion a chance to bounce back in Year 3.

So will 2020 be the do-or-die year for Patricia in Detroit? Justin Rogers of the Detroit News joined Phil Perry on the latest edition of "Patriots Opposing Views" to discuss.

"He was on the hot seat last year. He needed the vote of confidence from an owner that never speaks," Rogers told Perry. "She took the time to make sure to pull aside a few of the beat writers and announce that Patricia and [Bob] Quinn would both be coming back.

"And then within that, standards were set. This team needs to contend for the playoffs. And I know that's kind of a vague terminology, but I don't think going 3-10 out the gate is going to save his job. They're legitimately going to have to be competing in the month of December for a playoff spot to come back in 2021 assuming the 2020 season goes off as expected."

If contending for a playoff spot is what Patricia needs to do to keep his job, he'll have his work cut out for him. The Lions have finished dead last in the NFC North the last two seasons and don't project to be a contender for a division title in 2020 either.

Detroit did add some intriguing talent via the draft, namely Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah and Georgia running back D'Andre Swift. A number of former Patriots players are on the roster as well, including safety Duron Harmon and linebacker Jamie Collins.

Perhaps they could begin trending in the right direction, but if not, it sounds like there's a real chance Patricia will be looking for a new job next year.
