Topline
The Trump Organization announced Tuesday it is selling its public golf course in New York City, Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point, to Bally’s Corporation with the transfer operations and management effective immediately.
Key Facts
In a press release announcing the sale, executive vice president of the organization Eric Trump said the company had “no prior intention of selling” the course, but Bally’s came in with an “exceptional offer.”
In February, the New York Times reported that Bally’s came to a deal with the Trump Organization to acquire part of the Ferry Point property if it wanted, and the gaming company said it would strip the course of the Trump name—which can be seen in large font from the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge—if it earned one of three casino licenses the state is offering.
The Trump Organization opened Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point Park in the Bronx in 2015, and it later added a 20,000-square-foot clubhouse to the property; the terms of its lease with New York City would have allowed for the Trump Organization to run the course through 2035, if not for the sale.
Key Background
Removing the Trump name from the Bronx course has been a long time coming. After the January 6 storming of the Capitol, then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio attempted to break the city’s contract with the Trump Organization, arguing that former President Donald Trump’s actions on January 6 destroyed the “capability to attract tournament quality events, because the Trump brand is now synonymous with an insurrection against the federal government.” The attempted breach in contract was denied by a judge, but other damage in the golf world had already been done. Shortly after the insurrection, the Professional Golf Association changed its plans to host the 2022 PGA Championshipat Trump’s course in Bedminster, New Jersey, saying “conducting the PGA championship at Trump Bedminster would be detrimental to the PGA of America brand.”
Big Number
11. That’s how many golf clubs the Trump Organization owns in North America, nine of which are private. The two public golf courses are in Miami and Los Angeles, and Trump owns eight public courses throughout Europe and Asia, according to the organization’s website.
