Thousands of supporters of the right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s congress and other government buildings in Brasilia last night, smashing windows, destroying furniture and calling for the removal of President Lula da Silva’s government.
The protesters, who claim, without evidence, that last year’s election was stolen from their candidate, broke through a security cordon in the centre of the city for what appeared to be a short-lived coup attempt.
Police attempted to hold back the rioters with tear gas and stun grenades, some of which were dropped by helicopter, but were outnumbered. One mounted policeman was pulled from his horse and beaten.
Lula, who was inaugurated on January 1, was not in Brasilia and was on a visit to Sao Paulo
