Cars on Union event a crowd-pleaser in Saratoga Springs - The Saratogian

For the first time ever, the Saratoga Automobile Museum hosted the Cars on Union event.

Cars on Union was a way for people to come and see collector cars and experience the super cars, classic cars, and exotic cars that they might not get to see every day. The idea for the event came from the Cars on Fifth event in Naples, Florida because the Saratoga Automobile Museum has an auction in the town of Naples.

Not only were cars there for people to experience, there were a number of different food vendors people could go to at the event. The different food vendors were Death Wish Coffee Co., Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, Curvy Girls Food Truck & Catering, High Noon Food Truck, Kaleidoscope Ices & Creams and West Ave Pizzeria. There were also regular vendors that people could visit during the event as well like Emily Digital and the Factory Amsterdam.

There were trophy awards for the categories: Judge’s Choice, Best in Show, Hagerty Insurance’s Choice, and People’s Choice. The winner of the Judge’s Choice award was Michael Behrmen with his black 1995 Porsche 911. The Best in Show award winner was Sajjad Bhuiyan with his red 1992 Ferrari F40. The Hagerty Insurance’s Choice award winner was Peter Zalys with his 1973 BMW 2002.

The People’s Choice winner was Peter deBruyn with his red 1945 MG TC.

DeBruyn, the People’s Choice award winner, is from Saratoga Springs. When asked about how long he had owned the car, deBruyn said, “I bought it in 1999, so twenty-four years.” DeBruyn has brought his red 1945 MG TC to other car shows, with some being closer to home at SPAC and as far away as Connecticut.

Other car owners at Cars on Union, when talking about whether or not they drive the car around, said that they do not drive the car and instead choose another vehicle to drive, however, deBruyn and his wife enjoy driving the 1945 MG TC around Saratoga Springs in the summer months before storing away the car for the other seasons of the year.

Emily Dreisbach, a vendor at the event and owner of Emily Digital, has been coming to various car shows as a vendor for a little under a year. Dreisbach, when asked about how she thought the event went, said, “I think this was great for their first Cars on Union show.”

Megan Hennessey, the Director of Events and Programs at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, said, “It was an outstanding show. A huge thank you to all the officials to make this all happen. We had 110 cars at the show, so we did beat our expectations for the first one and we look forward to doing it again next year.”

Hennessey, when asked about what she hopes the event, Cars on Union, will be like in the future, said, “I think the show will only grow and get bigger. We’ll certainly continue to involve the community and I’m sure we will see some more cars, some wonderful cars that you probably don’t see every day.

“We are looking forward to working with the city on getting a date scheduled for next year.”

Cars on Union was sponsored by Death Wish Coffee Co., Discover Saratoga, Hagerty, Nyra, the Saratoga County Chamber, Porsche Clifton Park, Wide World Ferrari, and the Saratoga Springs City Center.

It will now be an annual event every year in Saratoga Springs. Next year’s event date is still being determined at this time.
