ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's basketball team scored on nine of its first 10 possessions of the game to take control early in an eventual 89-40 victory over Washington (Md.), Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.  The Mids improved to 4-2 on the year with the victory over the NCAA Division III program.

"Really proud of our kids," said Navy head coach Ed DeChellis.  "Not just for this game, but we had a really great weekend of basketball on the road (Navy won against Radford and at Furman last weekend).  It (today) was an opportunity for us to get everybody in the game.  Everybody participated; everybody made a basket.  I think it is really important to feel good at this time of the year.  We didn't get a lot of guys in the game over the weekend because they were very hard games.  I wanted to get some of our younger guys in the game and I thought they did a good job.

"We appreciate coach (Aaron) Goodman bringing his team here today."

The Mids scored on each of their first five possessions of the contest to quickly take a 10-2 lead.  Navy didn't allow the Shoremen to make a basket for the first five minutes of the game, by which time the score was 18-6.  A three-point field goal on Navy's next trip down the court –– the team's 10th of the afternoon –– pushed the advantage out to 21-6 with 14 minutes remaining in the half.  The Mids made all but one of their first nine shots from the floor to gain that 15-point cushion.

Navy put the game out of reach later in the half as a 21-0 burst made the score 44-11.  That run tied the school record –– starting with the 1983-84 season when play-by-plays from games became available –– for the most consecutive points scored in a game (William & Mary, Jan. 23, 1987).

The Mids went into halftime holding a 47-15 lead.  That 32-point margin is tied for the fourth largest for a Navy team through 20 minutes of play.  Navy made 61.3 percent of its field goals in the first half (19-31) and held Washington to a 16.7-percent effort (4-24) from the field.  The Mids also had a 26-10 advantage on the glass at intermission.

By the end of the game, all 18 Mids who dressed had played, and each player scored at least two points.  John Carter Jr. (Sr., Spring Hill, Tenn.) totaled a team-high 10 points, with fellow starters Daniel Deaver (Jr., Falls Church, Va.) and Greg Summers (Sr., Ocoee, Fla.) each adding eight points.  Additionally, Tyler Nelson (Jr., Monroe, N.C.) finished with a game-best nine rebounds and Jaylen Walker (Jr., Allen, Texas) accrued seven boards.

"We want to respect our opponents," said Carter.  "We wanted to come out and play Navy basketball regardless of who our opponent was.  Washington has a lot of good talent."

Navy totaled 27 assists on its 37 made field goals, which helped it shoot 57.8 percent from the floor in the game.  Further aiding that high percentage was the Mids scoring 56 points in the paint.

Defensively, Navy held the Shoremen to 28.3-percent shooting from the field.

"It was a total team effort," said DeChellis. "We shot it pretty well, we shared the ball really well; that's important.  We looked liked a basketball team with 27 assists on 37 baskets.  The guys shared the ball.  Sometimes when games get a little lopsided, guys try to do stuff they can't do and things get out of control.  But for the most part we played under control.  We made good offensive plays and good defensive plays."

Navy takes to the road Saturday for a 2 p.m. game at Mount St. Mary's.
