Crowds gathered Saturday evening to enjoy the Independence Bank Fireworks Festival and celebrate Labor Day at Panther Creek Park. Despite some last-minute changes to the festivities, the Saturday night event provided ample entertainment for the whole family.

While the festivities weren’t the same as expected, with the removal of pony rides and inflatables — families still found a way to enjoy their time in the nice weather before the show began at 8:15.

All over the park, families played on the playgrounds, fished, and listened to the Zach Ashby band in anticipation of the fireworks ahead.

“Obviously, it’s hard to be able to do many things … [but], the individuals who were with us tonight thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be out at Panther Creek and to be able to enjoy the fireworks,” said Daviess County Parks Director Ross Leigh.

As the fireworks show continued, many were surprised by a mushroom cloud explosion that left them thinking there was an issue; Leigh said that was the performance of the cloud in Owensboro/Daviess County.

“There wasn’t anything wrong; it was the use of flammable liquids … to create it as a part of the grand finale. It was a great experience,” Leigh said.

And while the crowd was surprised, Leigh said he is certain they enjoyed their night.
