CLEVELAND -- A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules roared over the crowd Monday on the final day of the Cleveland National Air Show, flying low and loud for the spectators. This C-130 and crew have been longtime regulars at the popular Cleveland show.
It circled around wide to the east of Burke Lakefront Airport and came in for a short landing.
It marked the last air show flyover for this C-130 and crew, based out of Mansfield, as the base is closing and the aircraft is being decommissioned.
As they taxied toward the airport, two massive sprays of water from airport fire trucks blasted an arc of water over the C-130, giving it a water salute for its final flight of the Cleveland Air Show as the crowd applauded.
A crew member popped the cockpit top hatch and emerged waving an American flag. The flag was to be signed by pilots and crew from the air show and presented to the family of fallen Navy corpsman Max Soviak from Berlin Heights, who was killed in the Kabul airport bombing in Afghanistan on Aug. 26.
It’s moments like these that make the air show so special to so many Northeast Ohioans.
The final day of the show on Labor Day was picture perfect, with mostly blue skies, comfortable temperatures and a pleasant lake breeze. Although exact numbers won’t be known for some time, crowds looked large for the show’s return after 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic. Spectators were treated to eyefuls of stunts both on the ground and in the air, with the apex being the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds roaring over Lake Erie, setting off car alarms on a few of their flyovers.
The Thunderbirds dazzled the crowd with tight formations and adrenaline-inducing afterburner passes.
It was the perfect ending to a much-missed Cleveland tradition.
