SOMERSET, Ky. (WTVQ) – One of the region’s biggest music festivals closes out its 28th year with record crowds.
And ‘Santa’ also was honored.
The annual Master Musicians Festival in Somerset literally had fans of all ages dancing to a variety of music and bands on three stages from across the state and Southeast Friday and Saturday.
Even rain Saturday night didn’t dampen the crowd’s spirits during the performance by headliners Blues Travelers.
Held on the grounds of Somerset Community College, the two days of music and activities are part of a bigger goal.
“Well we’re a hidden gem that’s not going to be hidden much longer. We’re going to promote Somerset, we’re going to tell our story. Instead of competing with our neighbors, we’re going to partner with them. We’re going to promote regionalism across Southern Kentucky. And we’re sick of getting our butts kicked in Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee and so Somerset is going to be on the map and I think people are beginning to not only see it but feel it,” Mayor Alan Keck said.
Attendance hit 4,000 Friday night and 6,500 Saturday.
The previous record was 6,000 total.
In addition to music, the festival featured food, crafts, art and other activities for kids.
During ceremonies Saturday afternoon, a well-know Somerset resident was honored.
Many know him as Santa at Christmas, but when it comes to music and the community, Tommy Cate is much more than that.
He is a master of several musical instruments who has a collection of instruments that matches almost anyone.
He is a successful businessman who is involved in numerus community activities, including playing Santa Claus at Christmas.
And now, he has been presented the annual Lifetime Achievement Award by the directors of Somerset’s annual Master Musicians Festival.
