North Carolina's coronavirus restrictions were eased in time for the Hurricanes to welcome 12,000 fans to its first playoff game against Nashville.
PEOPLE. >>> CLAUDIA HAGER IS THE NEW INTERIM MANAGER REPLACING WENDELL DAVIS WHO SERVED FOR 7 YEARS. >>> THOUSANDS OF HOCKEY FANS ARE CELEBRATING THE CAROLINA HURRICANES GAME ONE WIN IN THE PLAYOFFS TONIGHT. THE CROWD INSIDE WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST SINCE THE PANDEMIC. ERIN THOMAS IS LIVE OUTSIDE THE ARENA WERE UP TO 12,000 FANS WATCH THE CANES. SO MUCH EXCITEMENT THERE WHEN THE FANS COME AWAY WITH A WIN. >> Reporter: ABSOLUTELY. AS WE HEARD ONE PARTICULAR FAN COME OUT OF PNC ARENA AND SAY THAT IT WAS ELECTRIC INSIDE. YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK FOR YOURSELF. ALL THESE FOLKS ARE OUT HERE CHEERING AND FULL OF ENERGY AFTER THE BIG WIN. WE SPOKE WITH SOME FANS TONIGHT AND THEY ARE SAYING THE STATEWIDE EASE ON COVID RESTRICTIONS ON CAPACITY LIMITS COULD NOT HAVE COME AT A BETTER TIME. HERE AT PNC THE SAFETY PROTOCOLS ARE IN-PLACE. THIS IS THE LARGEST INDOOR EVENT IN THE TRIANGLE SINCE SOME OF THE COVID RESTRICTIONS WERE LIFTED. WE WANT TO GIVE YOU A CLOSER LOOK INSIDE. PNC USUALLY HOLDS AROUND 20,000 FANS. HOWEVER, THERE WERE 12,000 TICKETS SOLD. THIS WAS A SELLOUT CROWD. ATTENDEES WERE STILL REQUIRED TO WEAR MASKS INSIDE. THE NHL REQUIRES THE TEAM TO MEET AIRFLOW GUIDELINES. THE CENTENNIAL AUTHORITY THAT OVERSEES PNC AGREED TO FUND THE INSTALLATION AND ONE-MONTH OPERATION OF TEMPORARY AIRFLOW EQUIPMENT. THE FANS SAID THEY FELT SAFE AND TRULY MISSED THE IN PERSON GAME DAY EXPERIENCE. >> IT'S EXCITING TO KNOW THAT WE HAVE PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING AND NOT ONLY JUST A LITTLE BIT OF PEOPLE, BUT THEY INCREASED CAPACITY THIS WEEKEND. >> Reporter: WHAT WAS IT LIKE NOT TO HAVE THAT GAME DAY EXPERIENCE? >> GUT WRENCHING. I WANTED TO BE HERE ALL THE TIME. I WATCHED ON TV, BUT BEING HERE IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT STORY. YOU'VE GOT TO BE HERE. >> Reporter: CERTAINLY A LOT OF ENERGY OUT HERE AT PNC ARENA AFTER THE CANES DEFEATED THE NASHVILLE PREDATORS 5-2 TONIGHT. WE WILL KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THINGS. I WOULD IMAGINE A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL BE OUT HERE FOR QUITE A WHILE UNTIL HAVING TO FIGHT SOME OF THE TRAFFIC AFTERWARDS.
