CORAL SPRINGS, FL – In a virtual meeting with Coral Springs and Coconut Creek business owners, U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch said Tuesday he is confident a new federal stimulus bill is coming and he hopes local governments can get more control in handling Covid-19 outbreaks.
Deutch, D-Fla, who is seeking re-election, told about 35 members of the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce during a monthly “Wake Up Breakfast” event that negotiations are coming to an end on a stimulus package that would potentially contain a new round of checks and other relief.
“I have remained hopeful that there will be a deal,” he said.
Regarding the handling of the coronavirus, the congressman said he wants to see cities such as Coral Springs get the authority to take more local measures to prevent the spread, instead of following protocols set by Gov. Ron DeSantis.
He was making the point after chamber member and travel agent Jill Goldblatt asked if local officials can roll back state orders aimed at reducing safety restrictions such as allowing restaurants to operate at or near full capacity.
Goldblatt said she doesn’t feel comfortable going to restaurants full of people.
“Am I going to have to be in my shell until the vaccine comes out because I don’t feel safe living in this state?” she asked.
Deutch said he expects the debate over local control to escalate in the coming weeks and months as tourists from northern states come to Florida for vacation and bring with them the virus.
“Our local governments should be able to make decisions on a local case-by-case basis,” Deutch said. “I’d rather have Coral Springs City Commission make decisions if there’s an outbreak in one particular place than to be barred from doing anything which is what the governor told us. I don’t get it.”
He added: “All we hear, over and over, is that the government that works best is the government closest to the people.”
