Eric Trump played the hits Thursday in Washington County, giving a 20-minute speech to an enthusiastic audience that touched on many of the campaign topics favored by his father — President Donald Trump.

The rally, attended by about 300 people, was the second of three Trump Campaign appearances happening in Southwestern Pennsylvania this week as the president tries to ensure victory in what analysts say will likely be a crucial swing state.

Eric Trump condemned protests against the police, athletes who kneel during the national anthem and Democratic trade deals while promising his father would protect Christianity, gun rights, fracking and the steel industry.

“Last time, we were running against incompetence,” he said. “This time, we’re running against madness.”

He depicted the contest between his father and Democratic candidate Joe Biden as a battle for the future of America.

“My father needs this job like he needs a hole in the head,” Eric Trump said. “… But, honestly, we love you and we love this nation, and it’s hard to imagine what this nation would be under this agenda of socialism and anarchy.”

While Eric Trump listed Democrats who he said were promoting a radical agenda, including U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the crowd shouted out the name of Gov. Tom Wolf.

Eric Trump chuckled.

“You said it, not me,” he said.

He said protesters, who this summer have been involved in nationwide calls for police reform, are “sick.”

“Law enforcement, they are the bravest men and women we have in our country,” he said.

Biden has condemned violent protests and said he does not support calls to defund the police.

Eric Trump also attacked Biden’s son.

“If I did one-hundredth of what Hunter Biden has done, I’d be in jail for the rest of my life,” he said.

Hunter Biden was discharged from the Navy in 2014 after testing positive for cocaine. His business dealings as a board member with the Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings have been the subject of intense Republican scrutiny, though accusations that Joe Biden used his political influence to help his son’s company have been largely debunked.

Celebratory supporters

Trump fans lined up in sweltering heat outside the American Legion in Washington to see the speech.

Attendees said they were excited to show their support for Trump’s campaign.

“Ain’t going to find nobody better than (Trump),” said John Baker, a 76-year-old Marine Corps veteran from Washington. “Biden was in there eight years with (Barack) Obama, and they ain’t figured nothing out.”

Volunteers passed out water to people waiting in line. Some arrived hours before the rally’s 2 p.m. start time.

Monica Ashcraft came from West Virginia, wearing a shirt she designed herself that declared Donald Trump the “hardest working man in America.”

She was at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity Sept. 3 for the president’s rally.

“I never voted in my life until it was Hillary (Clinton) and Trump,” she said. “I couldn’t stand Trump, but I listened to what he had to say. I liked what he has to say because he’s not a politician. He doesn’t sugarcoat everything.”

A group of Bikers for Trump rode in early and revved their engines to welcome Eric Trump’s motorcade when it arrived.

Biden supporters show up

About 30 Joe Biden supporters held an opposing rally across the street. A truck with large Biden campaign signs drove past every few minutes.

Democrat Bob Sabot, supervisor in North Franklin Township, helped organize the Biden supporters.

“It’s not an anti-Trump protest, per se,” said Sabot, who was wearing a “Dump Trump” pin. “We know this county has turned red, but we need to do better on our numbers than we did in 2016.”

Trump won Washington County with 60% of the vote in 2016.

When Eric Trump took the stage, he joked that the bikers could win in a fight against the Biden supporters.

“I bet any one of them could take the guys across the street,” he said. “Antifa’s not messing with these guys.”

Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” is a loosely-defined term for militant left-wing groups.

Key battleground

Both Trump and Biden have made Southwestern Pennsylvania a campaign priority.

In addition to his rally last week in Westmoreland County, Trump on Friday plans to attend a 9/11 memorial event in Shanksville, Somerset County.

Vice President Mike Pence was in Murrysville and Beaver County Wednesday. He also visited Greensburg in July.

Biden was in Pittsburgh on Aug. 31. He also plans to attend a 9/11 memorial event Friday in Shanksville.
