Remedy Entertainment has hinted that it might be making more first-person shooter games in the future, following its work on the singleplayer campaign for the upcoming CrossfireX. Remedy is best known for its recent success with third-person action game Control, as well as Alan Wake and the Max Payne series.
CrossfireX is the console adaptation of Crossfire, an online first-person shooter for Windows. The game released in 2007 and to this day is listed as one of the highest-grossing video games of all time, as well as the single most played video game by player count, reaching 1 billion players earlier this year. Crossfire owes its immense success to its popularity in the Asian market, especially China and South Korea. Last year at E3, the Xbox exclusive CrossfireX was announced, with the singleplayer portion being developed by Remedy. This marks Remedy's first foray into first-person gameplay.
Remedy may be sticking with first-person for a while. In a recent interview with EDGE Magazine, as reported by Wccftech, Remedy executive producer Tuukka Taipalvesi and communications director Thomas Puha discussed their recent experience working on a first-person game. Puha discussed the challenges of firearm design, making sure a gun looked and felt good in a player's hands. Taipalvesi, meanwhile, talked about the possibility of making another FPS. His entire point of view can be pretty accurately summed up in the first sentence of his answer: "Never say never." Taipalvesi illustrated all the work that went into designing the team's first FPS, and stated that it would seem like a shame to let that work go to waste. "Now that we have built this toolbox," he said, "why not find other uses for it?"
Remedy clearly has big plans in store. Later this month, the studio will see the release of the last Control DLC, AWE, which will tie the game in with the events of Remedy's 2010 thriller Alan Wake. This DLC will serve as the gateway into a new shared universe for future Remedy games that unites Control, Alan Wake, and other titles. The developer has already confirmed that more games taking place in this new shared setting are in development. Based on Taipalvesi's remarks, it doesn't seem impossible that at least one of them might be a first-person shooter.
Remedy has definitely established an identity for itself. Even CrossfireX, which is pretty far removed from the rest of the studio's projects, clearly carries its influences, combining stylish, cinematic action with vibrant visuals and a supernatural story. Remedy's bombastic approach to game design has clearly been resonating with fans as well. The news that the studio is branching out into new forms of game is definitely good news for Remedy fans, because it means that future titles could be even more varied. First-person shooters might just be the beginning. As its games proudly show, Remedy's only limit is its imagination.
