Crowd cheers on Atlanta kids heading to track and field championships thanks to police - WSB Atlanta

ATLANTA — Dozens of kids from some of the city of Atlanta’s most underserved communities could soon be track and field state champions.

Channel 2′s Berndt Petersen was part of a large crowd outside the Dunbar Recreation Center in southwest Atlanta on Friday as they cheered on the city’s youngest ambassadors.

Volunteers and staff with the Police Athletic League and Atlanta’s Parks and Recreation Department say kids who grow up in disadvantaged neighborhoods can have it hard.  The children and their parents can use a helping hand.

“For us, it’s to know each kid by name, to see them here for ten years. I’ve seen 8-year-olds who are now 18,” Sgt. Vincent Sims said.

More than 80 children from some of the city’s most underserved communities are representing Atlanta at the Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s Track and Field Championship in Augusta.

Winifrid Webb’s daughter Demiah is on the team. 

“It means a lot to me. It’s life-changing for me. I was a teen mom. My daughter really enjoys doing it,” Webb told Petersen. 

“I’m doing something. I’m not staying in the house being bored. I’m doing sports with somebody, somebody else to play with,” Demiah said.

Parks and Rec Operations Director Charles Brown fired up the kids and their fans as they sent them off to the championships.

“A-T-L on three! One, two, three. A-T-L!” the crowd chanted.

Organizers say they’re raising up role models.  They started when the parents of these kids were kids themselves.

“For them to trust us enough means a lot.  They’ve been through the program and know how important it is.  And then they turn around and give us ‘their’ kids.  That’s all pride that we have right there,” Sgt. Vincent said.
