The eighth annual Silver City Holiday Artisan Market returned over the weekend, offering more than 30 fine artists and crafters indoors at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center. The market took place both Saturday and Sunday afternoon, drawing in a large crowd each day.
“This year was a really good show,” said Susan Porter, one of the three show organizers. “I think it went more smoothly than ever. The more we do this, the more practiced we are at it. So we kind of know what we are doing after all of these years.
“We had great artists this year — some of the new artists had really fun stuff,” she continued. “It was a really good show, and everybody did well.”
Marcia Heifner, who was a vendor for the first time this year, is originally from Memphis, Tenn., and said she has absolutely loved her time in Silver City, and had an amazing time at the market.
“I’ve enjoyed the heck out of it,” she said. “It’s been fun just visiting people and telling them about my art. I did stained glass art in Memphis, and then we moved out here. I started using my scrap glass from mosaics, and then it kind of deviated.”
Heifner’s art is all made from recycled and upcycled materials, and includes tinwork and mosaics, as well as beadwork.
Porter said the market thrives on not only community participation but also vendor feedback. An evaluation sheet is passed out to every seller after the show, allowing Porter and co-organizers Kim Muller and Julie Bailey to work to improve the show each and every year.
“The vendor feedback is what really helps us to get better,” Porter said. “There’s always places where you can improve, and that helps us to make improvements. The show is really about the community and the vendors, and you have to have good vendors to attract the community. We really appreciate our vendors and listen to their feedback.”
Shoppers and sellers alike seemed to have a great time at the show, as smiles could be seen ear to ear all around the room.
For the third year running, Gay Scheibl was a vendor at the market, and she said it’s one of the best artisan markets around.
“I love this because it is, in my estimation, the number one art [and] craft fair in Silver City,” Scheibl said. “People come, and it’s popular — I’ve seen lots and lots of people both days. I’ve sold more this time than previous years; however, I’m always in a different place. Previous years were prior to COVID — it’s been a lot different now.”
This year’s event saw a heavy turnout of people, with the biggest being on Saturday. Porter said it was much more than she had expected, although you never quite know in Silver City.
“Saturday, it was wall-to-wall people,” she said. “People were coming out of the woodwork — it was great. Everybody was in a good mood, everybody was being nice and polite and willing to wait. Some people were having to wait for a little while because we were so busy. Everybody was just in a great mood.”
Porter said they don’t plan on making future shows any bigger, instead focusing on keeping them local. This, however, doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of the next show.
“We are a juried show, which means that people have to apply,” she said. “If people are interested in being on our mailing list that says applications are open, they need to send us an email to [email protected] saying that they’d like to be on the mailing list. Usually in June, we send out an invitation for people to apply, and we ask them to provide photographs of their work.”
It took Porter and the other show organizers a few years to find the right venue, and the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center is the perfect place, according to Porter.
“Kaylee Ruebush and Romeo [Cruz] at the Conference Center were great to work with, and they helped a lot,” Porter said. “We really appreciate them. We really appreciate the community that supports the arts and comes and supports us, supports the artists in this community. It’s this synergistic relationship.”
