In Push to Democratize Data, Technology Leaders Balance Agility With Control - Forbes

Many organizations, seeking to make best use of their data assets and become more agile, have embarked on transformation initiatives that aim to put more data and analytics capabilities in the hands of both technologists and non-technologists alike.

To democratize these capabilities effectively, technology leaders are adopting new technology platforms, investing in upskilling programs and new ways of working, and forging stronger bonds with business partners to protect the reliability and integrity of corporate data and empower teams to unlock new sources of value.

Making this work requires a keen attention to detail and a strategic approach to managing enterprise data. Additionally, technology platforms must provide the required accessibility and user experience while delivering proper security and risk management.

No matter where data or applications reside, technology leaders must balance “empowerment and agility versus consistency and control,” said Erin Chapple, Corporate Vice President for Azure Core Product and Design at Microsoft.

Immutable data that meets teams where they are

At Seattle-based Adaptive Biotechnologies, cloud and virtualization technologies are helping scientists easily access immutable, trusted data for their research both inside and outside the lab.

Much of Adaptive’s data infrastructure and tooling is centralized. This allows the company to control the state of the data and who has access, which is crucial as Adaptive works to guarantee biologists can conduct reproducible research. Today, cloud-based tools enable scientists to access data via virtual machines and run analyses with confidence that they have reliable information.

“It’s about giving someone assurance that the data will be where you need it,” said Dr. Mark Adams, Chief Operating Officer at Adaptive. “There should be no additional burden.”

Adams noted that making sure the infrastructure and tooling act as expected, as well as managing cloud costs in a world of infinite computing resources, can be challenges as more capabilities become democratized. But those challenges are par for the course when weighed against new opportunities that can be unlocked.

“As we increasingly systematize where the data lives ... you get the ability to allow people to weave in data collected in a lot of different contexts,” he said. As the company evolves, teams across the firm will be able to more easily create data-fueled dashboards and more actively measure performance and progress toward goals.

Preparing organizations for a data-driven future

Lumen Technologies, the $19.7 billion telecommunications firm, is embracing a federated citizen developer model and re-organizing teams around business priorities “so that they become a natural extension of what the business is trying to accomplish,” Chief Transformation Officer Fletcher Keister said. The transformation aims to drive greater alignment between business and IT and equip the new teams with digital capabilities and access to data they need to complete their work effectively.

To get there, Lumen is rolling out a common platform and tooling, developing a clearly defined framework and governance principles to manage how those tools are used, and investing in training to help teams across the organization learn new technologies and get comfortable with more agile ways of working. This year, the company launched an initiative targeting 40 hours of development per employee in the strategic planning and transformation organization.

As organizations expand access to data and analytics capabilities to those beyond the technology department, data literacy becomes increasingly imperative. “Every part of every organization needs better data skills,” Gabe Dalporto, CEO of education platform Udacity, said at a recent conference. “It's not just the IT organization.”

More training, paired with the shift to new ways of working, not only provides teams with needed skills, but also gives them more opportunities to collaborate and strengthen relationships, a point Keister emphasized is at the core of any successful change initiative.

“The most important word relative to transformation is trust,” he said.
