U.S. Senate Republicans need to stand up and support gun control legislation
Why do Republicans oppose gun control? Take your pick — “guns don’t kill, people do”; “responsible gun owners don’t kill”; “prayers and thoughts are enough”; “background checks don’t stop a deranged killer”; “the NRA is my financial friend”; “I love my guns”; “I’m safer if I can carry a personal firearm”; “gun control infringes on my Constitutional right to bear arms.” Rep. Burgess Owens, Republican of Utah, loudly proclaims: “These rights protect my life, liberty, and property. They were granted to me by God; they cannot be taken away from me by D.C. bureaucrats.” — enough nonsense, you betcha!
Thirty people are killed daily by gun violence in the United States. U.S. House legislation (H.R. 1446) would give the FBI 10 business days for federal background checks to be completed before a gun sale can be licensed. Currently the government has only three days to complete a background check. A second bill (H.R.8) would expand background checks to those purchasing weapons over the internet, at gun shows and through certain private transactions.
Both bills are expected to languish on the Senate floor because not enough Republicans will join with Democrats to secure the required 60 votes. Yes, the filibuster is alive and well and is a friend of Republican “know-nothing” senators, not a friend of sensible gun control measures.
