CAMBRIDGE, Md.- A Cambridge juvenile is facing firearm and assault charges following accusations that he pointed a rifle at a large crowd of people on a city street on Thursday night.
Police said that shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the 900 block of Washington Street in reference to a large crowd. Before officers arrived on the scene they received further information that it was now a large fight. Upon arrival, officers noticed a large group of juveniles.
According to police, an investigation revealed that an earlier incident that occurred in the day sparked the large crowd. Officers found out that a male juvenile reportedly damaged property belonging to a home in the 900 block of Washington Street. The juvenile was in the crowd, at which time he refused to listen to officers and began to ran. Officers chased after him and placed him under arrest for failure to obey and malicious destruction of property.
Officers also learned that another male juvenile had pointed a rifle at the large crowd prior to police arrival. Officers were able to identify the juvenile and the weapon pointed at the crowd. Officers placed that male juvenile under arrest and charged him with first- and second-degree assault, possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment. He is currently being held at the Lower Eastern Shore Children Center. The weapon was also recovered by officers.
Additionally, while officers were on scene, another group of juveniles on bikes rode through and were cursing and yelling at officers and bystanders, causing a disturbance. When officers attempted to approach the group to speak to them, one of the juveniles again began cursing the officers and then threw a rock at the officer. The juvenile then fled the area.
“We as a community have to understand that juveniles riding bikes is one thing, we can educate them on the rules of the road, how to be safe when on the roadway etc. However, when you have juveniles terrorizing residents of our city by damaging property, waving guns, and assaulting police officers by throwing rocks, that is when it becomes unacceptable, not to mention dangerous, for the citizens and the police which it will not be tolerated," said Capt. Justin Todd, operations commander of the Cambridge Police Department.
