One teen was charged and several more were detained after several fights broke out among a large crowd — gathered for an unsanctioned football game organized on social media — at Guyer Field Thursday afternoon, according to law enforcement officials.

The fight remains under investigation and has become the subject of social media outcry.

Police said they were dispatched to Guyer Field in the 700 block of Laurel Street Thursday afternoon for a report that a juvenile had a gun. Police found and spoke with the teen and they said there was no evidence of any weapon. The teen then left the area.

While the officers were at the park, officials said they noticed a football game being played with a large crowd gathered. Police said upwards of 200 people were in the crowd.

A fight broke out among the juveniles in the crowd and the officers on hand worked to break up the fights and disperse the large gathering. The state police and Sheriff’s Office were called as back-up.

Police said Gabriel M.A. Day, 18, of Taylor Street, Utica, was taken into custody for disorderly conduct. Police said five other underage juveniles were taken into custody and were released to their parents and guardians at the scene. No charges were filed against the five, police stated.

Several videos taken from the scene showing police officers detaining the juveniles have been shared on social media, prompting cries online of excessive force.

Police said the crowd was eventually dispersed and the incident remains under investigation. Police said it was later determined that the football game was a planned event that was organized through social media, and such planned events require authorization from the City of Rome.

“For an organized event, you need a permit,” explained police spokesperson Lt. Sharon Rood.

Police said the participants in the event were juveniles from both Rome and Utica. Police said they are investigating why and how the event was organized and whether or not the fight was also planned. Police said additional charges are expected.

Anyone with information on the large gathering and the fight is asked to call Sgt. Scott Hoag with the Juvenile Aid Division at 315-339-7714.
