The Canada-US border isn’t likely to reopen this month due to the number of U.S. COVID cases.
Although the current closure agreement expires on Oct. 21, USA Today reported, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he will need to “keep these border controls in place.”
“The U.S. is not in a place where we would feel comfortable reopening those borders,” USA Today reported he told the hosts of “Smart Start."
“We will continue to make sure that Canadian safety is top of mind when we move forward. We see the cases in the United States and elsewhere around the world, and we need to continue to keep these border controls in place.”
Canada has reported nearly 31,000 new cases and 372 deaths in the last two weeks. Overall, the country has had nearly 192,000 cases and 9,709 deaths.
For the U.S., there were 54,512 new COVID cases reported on Tuesday, which is an increase of around 21% compared to the prior two week period, according to the New York Times.
Nearly half of the country is seeing a sustained rise in cases, including Massachusetts, which saw an 83% increase in cases compared to three weeks prior. As of Wednesday, 63 Massachusetts communities are considered high risk for COVID spread.
Trudeau also warned people from his country to not travel to the U.S.
“The challenges around the healthcare system being overloaded down there and access to health insurance – making sure you have coverage in case something does happen – are a lot more difficult," he said, USA Today reported. “People have to recognize they’re putting themselves at risk, putting their loved ones at risk. And they may not have the right kind of health insurance or repatriation flights that we did early on if they choose to leave the country.”
