Lauderdale County applies for Beaver Control Assistance Program - WTOK

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors re-applied for the Beaver Control Assistance Program, which is through the United States Department of Agriculture, at its meeting Monday morning.

“So what we do is we partner with the USDA office and also with the NCRS office which is in there also by the Ag Center, and we contribute money to that so that landowners can bring the tail in and turn it in and they’ll get paid $10 per tail to help alleviate the beaver population in Lauderdale County,” says Kyle Rutledge, the Board president. “[Beavers] can cause numerous problems to our roadways, and lakes, and ponds.”

According to the Mississippi State University Extension Services, the most effective way to control beavers on your private property is through trapping.

“[Beavers] are all over, you know they’re close to where waterways are,” Rutledge says. “All over Lauderdale County we have beaver problems.”

According to the USDA, the Beaver Control Assistance Program saves over $120,000 in road, bridge, and culvert protection across Mississippi each year.

“We’ve had a good relationship with our USDA Office and our NCRS,” Rutledge says. “We just appreciate the cooperation in working with the public on that.”

The Mississippi Beaver Control Assistance Program was created in 1990.
