Crowds of people facing hours-long waits have authorities telling people to avoid the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission offices the rest of the week.

Tuesday marked the first day the Vehicle Centers and Licensing Centers reopened during the COVID-19 pandemic, since closing about three months ago.

The MVC on its website said lines are very long and that potential visitors should consider waiting a week or more to come in.

Photos and videos from centers across the state, including the MVC Vehicle Center in Washington Township, Warren County, show crowds of people waiting. South Brunswick police reported customers were facing a three-hour wait.

Police shutdown one MVC agency due to crowding, nj.com reported, and broke up a fight at another agency.

By Tuesday afternoon, MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton said the centers were facing “extraordinarily high customer volumes.” Staff were sent to the busiest locations two hours before they opened.

“Our employees are doing the best they can to keep everyone safe & work efficiently as possible,” she said in a news release.

Transactions including renewing or replacing a license, registration, or change an address can be done online. The list of online services can be found here.
