Chaos broke out early Saturday morning when an after-hours party in the parking lot of a south-side Tallahassee gas station turned violent, with one person shot and killed.

Officers with the Tallahassee Police Department heard gunshots around 2:45 a.m. at the Rattler Gas Station, 1143 W. Orange Ave., the department said in a news release. They found mayhem when they arrived at the shooting scene, the city's second of the night.

“They quickly responded and were confronted with a crowd over 300 people," TPD said. "When officers attempted to get to the victim, the crowd surrounded the individual, making it difficult for officers and responding Leon County EMS personnel to assess the victim."

Emergency responders managed to "rapidly" place the victim on a gurney and escort the person from the scene. TPD released no information about the victim, including an age or gender, pending family notification.

"The victim was transported to the hospital, where they were unfortunately pronounced deceased," TPD said.

The gas station shooting shut down West Orange Avenue at Springhill Road for several hours. By 4 a.m., the crowd subsided to fewer than a dozen people.

“From all appearances, it was most likely a parking lot party of some kind," said Lizzy Kelley, a city spokeswoman.

It was the second fatal shooting in the capital city in a span of less than 12 hours and the fourth in the last month. Around 6:15 p.m. Friday night, a man was found shot and killed in the parking lot of University Courtyard Apartments, 3025 S. Adams St.

Few details were released about either case. Kelley said no arrests have been made in the two shootings.

Several people at the standing outside the crime scene tape at the gas station declined to speak to a Tallahassee Democrat reporter. Others said they didn’t know what happened. Officers at the scene said they couldn’t provide details.

The Police Department’s online incident map showed two firearm-related calls came in around the same time, at 2:45 a.m. and 2:52 a.m.

So far this year, there have been at least 40 shootings in Tallahassee and Leon County, killing 15 people and injuring 27, according to a Democrat analysis.

TPD asked that any witnesses who didn't speak with an officer on scene anyone else with information call 850-891-4200 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers line at 850-574-TIPS.

"This is an active investigation," TPD said, "and updates will be provided as they become available."
