Rochester police say they are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred minutes after officers dispersed a large crowd just blocks away early Friday morning.
Zahr Butler, 21, of Rochester was shot at least once in the torso on OK Terrace, just a few blocks from where officers dispersed a large group hanging out at Mazda Terrace and North Clinton Avenue, said Rochester Police Capt. Frank Umbrino.
Officers and troopers working together overnight were called to the scene around 12:50 a.m. and found a large group of people and Butler, who died at the scene. Umbrino said that many of the people at the scene of the homicide were from the same group dispersed from North Clinton Avenue.
No charges have been filed. Roads in the area temporarily closed overnight but reopened by 6 a.m.
The slaying marks Rochester's 22nd homicide of 2020.
Earlier this month, Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren issued an emergency order banning gatherings of five or more people in public places between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. The order, which is still in effect, followed a spike in gun violence in Rochester, including an incident earlier in July in which six people were shot on North Clinton Avenue as police were attempting to disperse a gathering of several hundred people.
More than 85 people have been shot in Rochester since June 1, including 9 homicides involving firearms.
