Police removed a "White Lives Matter" sign last Monday from a Sioux Falls resident's property at the homeowner's request after a crowd gathered around the man's house demanding the sign be taken down, said police spokesman Sam Clemens.

An officer responded to a residence at about 8 p.m. June 29 on the 1900 block of East 12th Street for a report of a crowd of about 15 people gathered on the sidewalk outside the man's house.

The group wasn't threatening the man and weren't on his property, but refused to leave until the man's sign, which read something to the extend of, "White Lives Matter. If you come onto my lawn, yours won't," was removed, Clemens said.

Everyone was within their rights, and it was the man's right to free speech to display his sign, Clemens said.

The homeowner refused to take it down himself, but the crowd refused to leave until it was removed, so the homeowner asked the officer to act as the mediator and remove the sign, Clemens said.

"Everybody was decent about it," Clemens said.
