A virtual crowd app has been used by Manchester City FC to add crowd sound to highlights of a recent game which received more than two million views in the first 24 hours when released to fans.
The football club has an ongoing collaboration with vCROWD app developer Salsa Sound which specialises in creating tools which help automate and augment live sports audio mixing using AI.
The company, which is a spin-out from the University of Salford, has also signed a deal with broadcaster CBS to provide the vCROWD app for coverage of National Women’s Soccer League matches in the US
Rob Oldfield, CEO of Salsa Sound, said: “When we were first hit by the pandemic it was a concerning time for us as our work focused on live events. Once it was clear that sports were returning behind closed doors, we created our vCROWD app. This creates a virtual crowd sound using an intuitive touchscreen interface with the operator controlling excitement and applause levels with a single gesture and triggering one-off samples of key events, like, cheers, jeers, chants and so on. This produces a realistic sound that fits the on-pitch action as if the real crowd were at the stadium.”
Salsa Sound will continue to offer the virtual crowd solution as lockdown is eased and fans return to stadiums, and plans to extend its automated mixing technology across multiple sports.
Other virtual crowd applications are also attracting interest. A QPR v Barnsley game recently saw the debut of an iPad-controlled virtual crowd system developed by theatre sound specialist Autograph and production agency Entourage. Two of Japan’s top football clubs have helped Yamaha trial its Remote Cheerer powered by SoundUD system at the Shizuoka Stadium ECOPA. Mo-Sys Engineering has also produced a camera tracking kit that interfaces directly with Unreal Engine or any broadcast render engine so that production companies can introduce images of virtual audiences into sports footage.
