ALLENTOWN, Pa. | An Easton man is facing assault charges in connection with the attack on a man late last month who was trying to keep an unruly crowd away from officers making an arrest.
Allentown police charged Carlton L. Walker, of Northampton Street, for his alleged role in the June 25 attack outside the 7-Eleven at 102 N. Seventh Street. District Judge Todd Heffelfinger arraigned the 56-year-old Wednesday morning, setting bail at $75,000.
Authorities were dispatched to St. Luke’s Sacred Heart Campus June 25 to for a robbery report. The victim, Fungai Mugwindri, told Allentown police several men attacked him in front of the convenience store after trying to keep an “unruly crowd” away from officers making an arrest, according to the criminal complaint.
The victim suffered several facial fractures that required surgeries.
Court records do not provide any detail about the arrest police were reportedly making in the 100 block of North Seventh Street.
During an interview with police the following day at the hospital, the victim said he was standing outside the 7-Eleven after police cleared the scene, when three men approached him and began assaulting him, according to court records. Mugwindri said he dropped his cell phone during the attack, and that a fourth man scooped up the phone and walked away.
Police said surveillance video footage showed three unidentified men approaching the victim and begin punching him. The victim tried to defend himself as Walker allegedly instigated the attack and picked up the victim’s phone. Surveillance footage also allegedly shows Walker saying something to the victim during the assault before walking away.
Allentown police said body camera and in-car camera footage showed all four suspects at the incident in which the victim tried to keep the crowd away from police.
On Tuesday, an Allentown police detective spotted Walker near Seventh and Turner streets. Walker allegedly admitted taking the victim’s phone but returning it to Mugwindri’s friend after the assault. Walker also allegedly admitted that the group attacked the victim in retaliation for trying to help police.
Walker now faces single felony counts of robbery, aggravated assault and conspiracy. He failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Jail to await a preliminary hearing.
