OAKLAND — Fire Department officials were still expressing concern Monday about a Lake Merritt crowd Saturday night that delayed the response of an engine company to a medical emergency call.
“Anytime an emergency response is impeded it’s very dangerous,” Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt said.
The troubling incident happened about 11:30 p.m. Saturday as a fire crew was attempting to respond to a report of a woman unconscious from apparent alcohol intoxication in a vehicle in the 2100 block of Lakeside Drive.
The engine crew was one of two roving patrols stationed near the lake to respond to such calls.
But the engine had to stop at the intersection of Lakeshore and Brooklyn avenues on the other side of the lake because of a large crowd, some of whom were “jumping, dancing and banging on the fire engine,” according to a social media post by the firefighter’s union. A video of what happened was also posted.
Hunt said the engine company eventually got through the crowd without the aid of police. With the delay, it took 14 minutes to get to the call, when it normally would have taken two or three minutes, officials said
By the time the firefighters arrived at the scene the woman was already being treated by an ambulance crew. Her condition were not available Monday.
In its post, the firefighter’s union said “our inability to respond to emergencies when we are needed is most distressing.”
Hunt said “The congregants at the lake have a serious responsibility to be mindful of the impact of what they are doing, which is impeding the ability of emergency responders to get to emergencies. And every second counts.”
