The infamous attack on the United States Capitol shocked us all, especially since it was encouraged by the president. Watching it, I heard one of the perpetrators say, “We are all good people. We just want a fair election.” I’m sure some of those who were there believed that. They believed the lies that Trump had instilled in them. They believed that the election was rigged, that Trump had won because the votes had been miscounted.
Of course, some of the people that were there were terrorists, criminal types who wanted to destroy the government. They should be prosecuted and put in jail. I think a great many of the people didn’t know what to expect. Urged on by Trump’s words, they followed the crowd and became part of the mob.
However, the ones who were there for religious reasons saddened me and also offended me. Conned by Trump, they believed that they were following Jesus. They had given their souls to a cult leader who falsified Jesus’ words and actions of love, compassion, forgiveness, and healing to a travesty of hatred, revenge, and destruction. They couldn’t hear his words from the cross, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And that is tragic for themselves and for our country.
