RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Black Hills Sports Show & Outdoor Expo held this weekend at the Civic Center brings education about the outdoors to the public with the help of vendors and organizations and community leaders like Jim Scull who are invested in future generations conserving land and learning and playing in the outdoors.

Jim grew up in Rapid City in what he describes as a humble home and beginning. After high school, he enrolled into the military and spent a year in Vietnam. Then his ambition led him to graduate from SDSM&T with an engineering degree.

He knew he wanted to live here in the Black Hills because he loves to hunt and fish and ultimately do anything outdoors.

He started doing some carpentry work like his dad and eventually started Scull Construction Company in 1985. He has seen changes in the Rapid City community over the past 35 years he has been in business. He wants to use his success to help others in need.

Scull says, “I just look at things, I look at situations, I try to dig in and I also happened to believe, as crazy as it may sound – it comes back ten fold, but when you give you certainly get. The universe is very kind and it’s just part of what we should be doing. And then you just see the good, gosh, you see people come to you that just were overwhelmed by the gift, it can be a small gift sometimes people that are overwhelmed because nobody has ever given them a thing.”

Jim recently collaborated with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to protect additional acres of land, with a total of over 19 thousand acres donated to the protection of wildlife and habitat – set aside for only farming and ranching purposes. One of his heroes is conservationist and former President, Teddy Roosevelt.

In addition to being a dedicated conservationist, Jim also is engaged in helping the youth and began South Dakota Youth Hunting Adventures 14 years ago – a mentoring program teaching youth proper gun use and hunting and fishing skills. The game processed goes to the families involved.

Jim says, “What a better way for a child to learn about weapons and how to use them, you know, properly and what they actually do and what the safety features need to be and then getting outdoors was of course huge because it truly is moving away from that.”

Jim engages in many organizations that give hope for a child’s future and helping them face the many challenges that lie ahead, saying, “My thing is moving kids out of a place of desperation of lack of hope of life has no value and so to start making that transition that your life is not typical, this isn’t normal the way you’ve been living – lets talk about normalcy and what it looks like.”

He also donates his time and talents to building projects to Abbott House, Passages and Rural America Initiatives.

Jim says, “They have to believe there is a future – there’s hope, there’s a way forward, they can be a solid functioning citizen, but when they start out, it’s not even in their mental make up.”

His passionate efforts landed him into the SD Hall of Fame 2019 – he credits mentors in his life to steering him in the right direction and pushes others to challenge their mindset and adds, “You know what I do a lot of times is I encourage people and tell them why not – part of it is just building the energy of success.”

Jim’s father loved music, growing up from ages seven to 14, his family had a band and Jim was the drummer. They played three nights a week all over Western South Dakota. They called themselves ‘Jimmy Scull’s Orchestra.’
