‘Control: Ultimate Edition’ Just Can’t Stop Crashing On Xbox Series X - Forbes

seliranga.blogspot.com

Control is one of the best five games released in the last five years, and I’ll fight anyone who says differently, even though I’ll lose said fights because I’m rubbish at fighting. However, one thing I can’t defend about Control is the performance of this month’s newly-upgraded Ultimate Edition, which almost wills you to stop playing it.

After 18 long months, Control’s next-gen upgrade for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 has finally landed. For the most part, it really is worth the wait–maybe even justifying the extra money that 505 Games and Remedy are forcing people to pay, given they didn’t grant the upgrade to last-gen buyers for reasons that are, as TheSixthAxis so perfectly describes, “clear as mud.”

But good god, on Xbox Series X, you’ll never see a game crash so often–or so abruptly. During my 12-hour replay of the game on XSX, it crashed not once, or twice, but 16 times. Just as you’ve watched a cutscene, popped an achievement, overcome a major plot point, or simply readjusted your mods, you’ll find yourself pushed back onto the dashboard.

Even more weirdly–and it’s hard to say if this is because of the Series X’s super-fast architecture–you find yourself back at Xbox Home in under two seconds. A quick flicker of the Xbox power button’s light is the only thing that confirms something’s amiss. This is a first for me; I’ve played a couple of games that crashed on the XSX, but they still lock the console up in the same way they did with the Xbox One and One X.

Luckily, you can jump straight back in. Getting from the XSX dashboard and back to actively running around as Jesse Faden takes about 15 seconds, and everything is the same as you left it. During one crash, I was halfway through deconstructions and mod equipping, and the game was exactly as I was forced to leave it. It’s actually quite impressive, in a frustrating way.

A quick check of The Googles confirms as much; Reddit’s Series X community, in particular, has highlighted the problem. Still, there doesn’t seem to be any discussion about fixing the issue; Remedy will hopefully get on it soon.

This major but fixable problem aside, revisiting the Federal Bureau of Control in this next-gen upgrade is a treat. While its framerate isn’t exactly consistent–and still suffers from slowdown coming in and out of menus or cutscenes–it’s the smoothest it’s ever been. You don’t have to wait forever for the map to render. The second time around, its lore feels deeper and more engaging. Its gameplay remains sublime.

Last year, I didn’t hold back with my praise for its DLCs, The Foundation and AWE, which were incredible but sad footnotes to an IP that could’ve gone on forever, not least because its story was so fascinating and brilliant. Control Ultimate Edition only proves this more: a game that’s perfectly suited to its new home on Series X and PS5, and one only truly limited by narrative creativity–something certainly not lacking at Remedy.
